Vishwakarma Institute of Management, Pune had organized a half-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on ‘Theory of Constraints (ToC)’ at VIM Campus on Monday, 14th Dec 2015.
The resource person for the FDP was Mr. Sameer Kulkarni, a management consultant & an expert in the area. Mr Kulkarni is also a member of the Corporate Advisory Board in Information Technology at VIM.
The session started with discussion on management concepts like ‘Capacity’, ‘Constraints’, ‘Bottlenecks’ and ‘Throughput’. The resource person illustrated various examples from management to elaborate the same. Thereafter, discussion on ToC started and the resource person discussed the 5 step approach of ToC as follows:
- Identify the constraint
- Decide how to exploit the constraint
- Subordinate everything else to the constraint
- Elevate the constraint
- Avoid inertia & repeat the cycle
The resource person gave a demonstration on ‘Three Bottles Approach’ to clearly explain the concept of ToC. The session ended with the resource person discussing two cases of ToC implementation in manufacturing & service organizations followed by a discussion on how ToC could be applied effectively in Academia. The focus of the FDP was on emphasizing the usage of ToC across various functional areas and in personal life as well.
